Resources

Children, just like adults can experience overwhelming emotions. Many times, children do not yet have the resources to effectively mange big feelings. This is why it is important that we support the mental health of children by helping them to understand and identify emotions and to learn strategies to manage them.

A great way to start teaching kids about emotional health is to help them identify and discuss common emotions. These may be emotions that the child, someone else, or even a character in a movie or show is experiencing. Having talks about distressing emotions when things are calm make it more likely that they will be able to identify their emotions (and apply a coping skill) when they are feeling distress.
